2021 marked ten years since the organization of RISE, the Regional Incubator for Sustainability & Entrepreneurship. RISE provides support and assistance to entrepreneurs and small businesses in Erie and Huron Counties. In its ten years, the program served over 350 small business owners. Its services include free 1-on-1 business advising, assistance in accessing resources, and events and programming for networking and learning.
To celebrate the anniversary and National Small Business Week, RISE shared ten reasons to start a business. In 2021, there were 32,540,953 million small business in existence in the United States. 32,540,953 million that found a reason to start. If you own a business or are thinking about starting, what is your Why?
1. You can solve a problem
A great reason to start a business is because you have a new idea that will solve a problem! You can make life easier or better for someone.
2. You can be creative
Creativity is a valuable skill to have as an entrepreneur and as a business owner, you can be as creative as you want. product or service, in your marketing, in your business model, in your space, and more
3. Flexibility
Being your own boss has its benefits. You get to decide when you’ll work, why you’ll work, and how you’ll work.
4. Create your own work environment
Have you ever worked where the work environment and culture just weren’t a great fit for you? Starting your own company allows you to decide what is. It can be as formal or casual as you wish!
5. Entrepreneurship is essential to our economy

6. Make your community vibrant
We all want to live in a great place. Where there is exciting things to do and experience. Small businesses are a crucial part in making a community vibrant. They offer unique products and services to their community.
7. Meet new people
As a business owner, you will mee new people all the time. Customers, suppliers, employees, and more! It’s a great opportunity to make lasting friendship and connections which are truly priceless.
8. Feel fulfilled
You are finally doing what you always dreamed of doing. Starting your own business doing what you love will make you feel like you are on the right path. Sure, there are ups and downs to running a business, but it’s your dream and that is special.
9. Learn new skills
You’ll wear many hats as an entrepreneur. Sometimes, you’ll be on the frontlines doing the work or behind the scenes keeping your books. Wherever you are, you’ll be learning new skills that will benefit you in your business and life.
10. Inspire others
You did it! Started your business and decided to execute on your dreams! There will be others watching your success rooting for you and becoming inspired by you! You could be the reason someone started their own business, too!
